Huge and reasonably large units with balcony, a peaceful garden, as example, and very amiable staff. Outstanding food choices for breakfast...

I had an amazing stay with excellent service. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, providing pick-up and drop-off service from the nearby bus stop. The hotel also had a tattoo-friendly approach for their onsen. The room was spotlessly clean, and the Kumamoto delicacy breakfast was a great way to try many new dishes. The location was beautiful, with easy access to the forest and a stunning viewpoint for Aso mountain.
Nothing.

We were pleasantly surprised by the warm hospitality and genuine Japanese experience at this ryokan. The pick-up service from the bus stop was a nice touch, and the owner even gave us a personal tour of the mountain area. The food was fresh and delicious, and the sulphur onsen provided a truly therapeutic experience. The quiet and relaxing ambience added to the overall serenity of our stay.
While we understand that Japan is still new to vegan options, it would have been nice to have some available at the ryokan, especially for breakfast. The outdoor onsen, although scenic, could use some cleaning up as it had fallen leaves and felt a bit "dusty.

The location was great, with many nearby walking trails through nature. , the room was spacious and clean, the staff were friendly and always willing to help us out with any questions we had. The outdoor bath was also amazing, and we enjoyed soaking in the hot water while admiring the beautiful scenery.
We did not have a good New Year's experience, as the hotel did not offer any special activities or events like other places we have stayed at previously during this holiday. the meal provided was not up to our expectations, as the flavors and textures were somewhat lacking and uninspiring.

The hot springs were amazing and very clean, and the staff were super friendly and welcoming. Our room was spacious and cozy, with a lovely relaxing ambiance. We also enjoyed the traditional breakfast and dinner, which were meticulously prepared and beautifully presented.
It was a bit challenging to find the hotel at first, as it is located on a narrow road that's easy to miss. the meals mostly consisted of fish and meat sashimi, which might be a challenge for those unfamiliar with this type of cuisine.
